Rite of Welcome & Acceptance
Rite of Welcome and Acceptance
The Rite for Entrance into the Catechumenate is the first step for an adult seeking Baptism. It welcomes
the candidate to the journey toward full initiation and beyond. The relationship between the one to
become a catechumen and the entire community of the baptized is established during this rite. This rite
is done at the entrance of the Church, symbolizing the catechumen’s entrance into the world of
Christianity. The Rite takes place immediately after the Opening Prayers of Mass. The catechumen is
questioned by the celebrant asking for his initial commitment. Then the celebrant, sponsors and
catechists sign the forehead and the senses with the sign of the cross, expressing that they are claimed
by and for Christ completely, mind, heart, body and soul.
Sunday, October 13 we celebrated this rite with Parker Hearne at St. Peter. Parker has been
participating in our OCIA process since Easter and is preparing for his full initiation into the Catholic
Faith. Parker is sponsored by his fiancée, Mackenzie. Please welcome Parker when you see him at Mass
or other events. Please include him in your prayers as well as the other 12 adults in the program
working toward Adult Confirmation and Reception into the Church.
